Duplex Steel is particularly suited to applications in challenging environments such as the North Sea, in chloride and sulphur environments, at temperatures as low as -50ºC and as high as 300ºC. It is stronger and more resistant to localised corrosion phenomena such as crevice corrosion, pitting corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking than austenitic stainless steels, and stronger and tougher than ferritic stainless steels particularly at low temperature, and tougher and more corrosion resistant than martensitic stainless steels.

Duplex stainless steel is a stainless steel in that it contains more than 10.5% Cr, and has a dual-phase microstructure of roughly equal parts ferrite and austenite. The metallurgy of duplex steels is complex, and seeks to optimise competing properties of strength, toughness, corrosion resistance and manufacturability.

Super duplex

Super duplex steels must have sufficient levels of Cr, Mo, N and W to give a pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) over 40%. These grades have increased pitting corrosion resistance over duplex and austenitic grades. Pitting resistance is equivalent to super austenitic grades of steel at a much lower cost.

Copper bearing duplex

Duplex steels may contain copper additions which seek to optimise corrosion resistance. Precipitation hardening can be applied to these alloys to increase yield strength, as with Labour R48.
