Duplex Steel Castings are ideal for challenging environments

The unique combination of high strength, toughness and corrosion resistance, particularly localised corrosion, make Duplex Steel ideal for the oil & gas and petro-chemical industry.

Duplex Steel is particularly suited to applications in challenging environments such as the North Sea, in chloride and sulphur environments, at temperatures as low as -50ºC and as high as 300ºC. It is stronger and more resistant to localised corrosion phenomena such as crevice corrosion, pitting corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking than austenitic stainless steels, and stronger and tougher than ferritic stainless steels particularly at low temperature, and tougher and more corrosion resistant than martensitic stainless steels.

Norton Cast Products have become specialists at producing castings in duplex alloys, so if you are sourcing duplex stainless castings for use in sea water, low temperature or similarly aggressive conditions then Norton Cast can work with you to produce a bespoke product to meet the most demanding specifications.

Typical Environments Duplex Steel Castings are designed for...

  • Oil and Gas: a wide range of equipment: flowlines, manifolds, risers, pumps, valves
  • Pulp and Paper: digesters, pressure vessels, liquor tanks
  • Chemical engineering: pressure vessels, heat exchangers, condensers, distillation columns, agitators, marine chemical tankers
  • Water: desalination plants, large tanks for water storage, waste water treatment
  • Renewable energy: Biogas tanks
  • Mobility: tramcars and bus frames, tank trucks, iron ore wagons
  • Engineering: pumps, valves, fittings, springs
  • Architecture and Infrastructure

Why Choose Norton Cast Products?

Norton Cast Products has the expertise to manufacture castings in this demanding  material; using a well-established and proven manufacturing process which is approved in accordance with NORSOK M650, Equinor TR2000, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, PED 2014/68/EU Annex I 4.3 assessed by TUV Nord, DNV GL rules for classification – ships, ABS Rules, BV Mode II.
Norton Cast Products can produce castings in duplex; and super duplex steel:

  • with wall sections size – 8 mm to 250 mm
  • weighing – 0.2 kg up to 7,000 kg
  • in one offs or in batches
  • of complex geometry using the sand casting process, such as impellers and pump bowls
  • to test the material and components to ensure integrity of the finished product
  • in compliance with industry and end user specifications

Duplex

Duplex stainless steel is a stainless steel in that it contains more than 10.5% Cr, and has a dual-phase microstructure of roughly equal parts ferrite and austenite. The metallurgy of duplex steels is complex, and seeks to optimise competing properties of strength, toughness, corrosion resistance and manufacturability.

Super duplex

Super duplex steels must have sufficient levels of Cr, Mo, N and W to give a pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) over 40%. These grades have increased pitting corrosion resistance over duplex and austenitic grades. Pitting resistance is equivalent to super austenitic grades of steel at a much lower cost.

Copper bearing duplex

Duplex steels may contain copper additions which seek to optimise corrosion resistance. Precipitation hardening can be applied to these alloys to increase yield strength, as with Labour R48.
